Cozumel is another one of Mexico's very popular tourist attractions. There is a lot of rich cultural heritage in and around this area. Cozumel in Mayan means Island of the Swallows and it is located off the shore of the eastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula. It is not so far from Cancun. It is world renowned for its scuba diving as well as other water related activities. It is a most historic event and a must see for any tourist traveling here in the end of the April month. This annual event was started over one hundred and fifty years ago by Casimiro Cardenas. This man was one of a group that had fled to this island from the village of Saban on the mainland. He and his people fled after an attack during the War of Castes. These attackers that they fled from killed many of the other villagers, but he and a few others escaped while he clutched tightly to a wooden cross. So it was that the tradition of this festival was born when Cardenas vowed to begin this tradition wherever he and the few survivors settled. It was to be in held to honor the religious and holy power of the crucifix in which he held. So for the religious traveler, this may be a festival of some interest for reasons other than its great festivities. The festivities include a rodeo, music, traditional feasts, bull fights and other competitions. This celebration lasts about five days and is most worthy of visiting if you happen to be in the area.

Cozumel is well known for its biodiversity. There are quite a number of endemic species to this island, some which are on the brink of extinction which should attract any tourist to see the fading beauty that is here. There is the Cozumel thrasher which is nearly extinct if not already so, the Cozumel vireo which can only be found here and the Cozumel wren. Another highly endangered species that dwells here is the great curassow and of course the Cozumel emerald. There are several dwarf mammals that live here on the island such as the Cozumel island raccoon and the dwarf coati which is another highly endangered animal. Not to forget the Cozumel fox and the ever splendid toadfish which is also becoming endangered.

Annie Taylor Survives a Barrel Trip over Niagara Falls

It's hard to imagine; someone actually going over Niagara Falls in a barrel and surviving the attempt. It's even harder to imagine that someone would even consider doing such a thing. Nevertheless, Annie Taylor was the first person to pull off this stunt successfully in the year 1901, and she managed to come out of it with nothing more than a minor cut on her forehead.

Annie Taylor had a manager for the event and she had high hopes that her successful trip over the falls would make her rich enough to pay off her debts. Hopping into a rowboat, with her wooden barrel trailing closely behind, the widowed Michigan schoolteacher rowed out to an area just before the falls and climbed into the barrel on October 24, 1901. After her safe arrival at the bottom of the falls, the stunt being successfully accomplished did not gain her the fame she desired.

Since Annie Taylor's successful attempt, others have tried to go over the falls, and although they have succeeded, it is not without significant injury. Bobby Leach went over the falls in a barrel made of steel just ten years after Annie Taylor and broke both of his knees in the process. Further, Jean Lussier made a successful trip over the falls in a rubber ball, but not without his share of nail biting moments.

Finally, many individuals have died in an attempt to match Annie Taylor's accomplishment. Charles G. Stephens lost his life in his attempt to conquer the deathly waters of Niagara in 1920; George L. Statakis suffocated after making the 175 foot drop in 1930; and Robert Overcracker died in his attempt to Jet Ski over the falls with a parachute that sadly failed him in 1995.

Women are not the only ones who have been victimized by being held captive, however, while their credit cards were taken from ATM to ATM. Any traveler who is by themselves is urged to only travel in the day light and to stay in well populated areas. Even Mexican citizens are subjected to this kind of treatment. Travelers beware!

Kidnapping is also a big problem in Mexico. Nearly all the kidnapping cases that are reported victimize travelers. The crime rate for kidnapping is raising at an alarming rate. So, once again, if you are an American citizen abroad, you are urged to keep your travel to the day time and keep yourself in well populated areas. Kidnapping of this nature have occurred in nearly all major Mexican cities and are being coined express kidnappings for their nature. A traveler is kidnapped, but only for short times for their money, more directly, money on their credit cards that must be gotten from ATMs. Crimes of this nature are not only targeting the wealthy, but the middle class as well.

Crime does not only occur on the streets but also on the highways! Travelers need to exercise extreme caution at all times, even when they are driving. The United States Embassy would like travelers to know that avoiding night travel is one of the smartest things you can do while on a vacation or business trip to Mexico. Everything that can be done during the day should be done that way. If you must travel at night then you are advised to use the toll roads as opposed to the free highways that anyone may travel on. It is said that keeping your doors locked and your windows up it a precaution you definitely want to take. It doesn't matter if you're on the highway or in town, remember to take these preventative steps for your own safety. The Embassy also would like American travelers that are stopped in traffic or in heavy traffic to leave themselves enough room to maneuver out of it to escape if need be. Above all else on the road, do not hitchhike! It is better to be safe than sorry while traveling outside of our country.

Downtown is where you can find the most attractions of the city. If you get to visit nowhere else in the city, downtown should be your first stop. The style of things here in the downtown is a more colonial style with a little bit of Italian influence. There is an official entrance to downtown which is through Puerta del Reloj, or the Clock Gate. This Clock Gate comes out and onto the Plaza de los Coches or Square of the Carriages. Not but a moment's time from there is the Plaza de la Aduana or the Custom's Square, which is next to the mayor's office. Yet another Plaza not so very far from these points is the San Pedro Claver Square and of course his namesake's church. Here close to this Square is the Museum of Modern Art. As you travel along from here you will find the Plaza de Bolivar and the Palace of the Inquisition on one side. Not too much further from here you will find the office of Historical Archives which holds Cartagena's colorful history. Next to the Archives building you will find the Government Palace which, of course, holds the governor of the Department of Bolivar. If you travel across the street from this building you will find the Cathedral of Cartagena. If these religious temples interest you there is one more stop you should make in you journey around Cartagena. The Santo Domingo Church is a beautifully restored landmark and is worthy of the time taken to see it.

Mexico is a chiefly Spanish speaking country that is about three times larger than Texas. It has a rapidly growing economy and a large tourist industry. American citizens are urged to remember that standards of security and safety may not be the same outside of our country. Traveling to Colombia

Colombia is the second most populated country in South America. Colombia has a very diverse geological setting, from rivers and rainforest to mountains and rugged terrain. The tourist facilities in Colombia are varying in quality and safety in accordance to the price and their location. So when traveling to Colombia you must make sure you do a proper background check to the places you will be arriving at, your hotels, and your rental places for your own safety.

There are a few things U.S. citizens and all other non Colombian citizens must do before they are allowed to enter the country. One must, of course, be able to show a valid passport to enter and leave Colombia. U.S. passports that are issued from Colombia can take up to eight days for processing, and under certain circumstances, considerably longer than that. The easiest way to get around this, of course, is to obtain your passport before leaving the United States or the country in which you reside.

As it goes with many other countries, your stay in Colombia will be determined by a Colombian immigrations officer and will be stamped into your passport. You will be able to request extensions of time you are allowed to stay if need be from the Colombian Immigration Authority. This department is known as the DAS or Departamento Administrativo de Seguridad. If you are planning on staying longer than three months' time in Colombia you must register you VISA within fifteen days time of your arrival in Colombia, and this must be done at the Departmento Administrativo de Seguridad. If this is not done you may have to face some hefty fines while abroad. There is no tax upon your arrival in Colombia for entry, however, you must pay a tax of around sixty dollars upon your leaving Colombia. There are some airlines that will include a portion of this tax for you in with your tickets, so be sure to check with your airline before you leave to see if this will apply for you.

Try not to lose your passport while you are abroad or you will be forced to obtain a new one before you are allowed to leave. If your passport happens to be stolen while you are abroad, you will have to file a police report and of course wait for a new one to come in. You will not be allowed to exit the country unless you are able to show your passport, with no exceptions.

The Secretary of State has identified three Colombian groups that may pose a threat to travelers, The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia FARC, the National Liberation Army ELN, and United Self Defense Forces of Colombia AUC. These organizations are all recognized as foreign terrorist groups. These groups have been known to carry out bombings and other attacks around major urban areas, even with civilian targets. However, within the last four years these happenings have decreased. There have been fewer cases of kidnappings, bombings, and other violent crimes. Located in northern Colombia, Santa Marta is on the Caribbean and is a popular tourist attraction for the country. Here in Santa Marta you can also find the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains, which are quite a beautiful sight for anyone in the area to check out. This is a very important maritime port with rich history and culture. This wonderful city was the first city to be founded in Colombia and the second city founded in all of South America, which is another reason it is a great place for tourism, due to its extensive history. However, like most major cities in Colombia, it has been affected by the Colombian Armed Conflict. Fortunately, it has only been moderately affected unlike cities like Bogota which have been largely affected.

Santa Marta may very well be the biggest hot spot for tourism in the country of Colombia. It has quite the array of historical and modern sights to see as well as many sights for the eco-tourist. Every year Las Fiestas del Mar, or The Festival of the Sea, is celebrated here in Santa Marta. This festival is held around the months of June and July and serves as a large tourist attraction during the midyear vacationing season. One of the most anticipated events here every year is the jet ski show organized by the Santa Marta Esqui. Like most other South American festivals there are parties, music, beauty pageants, and parades throughout the city. People here in this part of the world are very serious about their celebrations! This particular festival even has its own slogan: Santa Marta, la magica de tenerlo todo, or in translation, Santa Marta, the magic of having it all!

Of course you can find other museums, monuments, and parks within this gorgeous city. The last home of the city's founder, Simon Bolivar, was made into a museum for his honor. Here you will find many artifacts that are important to the history of this city and to South America. One of the oldest Cathedrals in South America may also be found here. This Cathedral is a national monument and also held the remains of Simon Bolivar until 1842. Here you will also find the oldest house of America, built in 1530; it is called La Casa de la Aduana or simply the Customs House. Today it is actually known as the Tayrona Museum, and is one of the more popular tourist sights. Here in Santa Marta you can also find the building which is known as the jewel of colonial architecture. This building is known as the Madame Augustine House. Close outside the city you will find the San Fernando Fort which is another great example of colonial architecture. It was built to protect the city from pirates and the like. Of course, a trip to Santa Marta would not be complete without visiting the Tairona National Park, which is located about thirty four kilometers north of Santa Marta. This reserve is by far the most important one inside the country of Colombia and holds vast beauty for the locals and the traveler abroad.

There comes a point when you have seen enough restaurants, monuments, and other typical tourist attractions. Children especially may not find these too exciting. France offers quite a few theme parks to keep families happy. They can be located throughout the country and differ in size and themes.

You do not have to be in North America to enjoy Disneyland. Disneyland Resort Paris includes two theme parks. It opened in April of 1992 and was the second Disney resort to open outside of the United States. It is one of Europe's biggest tourist destinations. The first theme park is based off the original park in California. It is the largest based on the original with more than 140 acres. Walt Disney Studios Park is another spot to visit. You may not want to see Disneyland since you could see it in the United States whenever you wish. Another fun theme park to visit is Parc Astrix. The theme park is based on the stories of Astrix. Astrix is a series of French comic books. The park is located 20 miles north of Paris, in the city of Plailly. If you enjoy roller coasters, this is the park for you since it is known for its large variety of roller coasters to choose from. Other features of the park include a swinging ship, a rapid river ride, and a haunted mansion that has special effects. It used to be open only from April until October, but since 2007 the park is also open in the winter.

Puy du Fou theme park is the second most visited attraction in France after Disneyland Paris. Puy du Fou is a historical theme park that is located in Western France in the city of Les Epesses. The theme park has five attractions to choose from. One of the attractions is known as The Vikings. It is a set reconstructed from a 1000 year old fortress. Gladiators are another part of the park. It takes place in a replica of a coliseum in Rome. The show consists of traditional parades, chariot racing, and executions. There are many other shows to be entertained by when visiting the park.

One other park that can be fun for the whole family is located in Lower Normandy, France. Parc Festyland has a theme that is both in its rides and restaurants. A lot of the park has to do with Vikings. You will find roller coasters, bumper cars, and a water slide.

Santiago de Cali is also referred to as Cali for short here in the country of Colombia. This city is the main municipality and capital of the Valle del Cauca, which is a department in western Colombia. Cali is the third largest city in Colombia with a population of over two million. It is home to the fastest growing economy in the country and is a very significant reference point because of its geographic location. The first part of this great city's name is in honor to the apostle Saint James. Just as in many South American cities it has many cathedrals and important religious temples. A humorous side not for this now notoriously large city is that its beginning population, for quite some time, was no more than seventeen people.

This is another great South American city to find yourself visiting if you are a sports fan. As a matter of fact, it is the sports capital of Colombia. In the same year that this great city was named the sports capital of Colombia, they also finished the construction of the second largest building in Colombia. This building is known as the La Torre de Cali, or the Cali Tower. This gigantic building houses a hotel, offices and even apartment complexes. It stands forty two floors above the city and is a wonderful stop on any vacationing trip here to Colombia. You can even reserve a room in the hotel here at this great tower, but plan ahead because it becomes booked for months in advance!

Santiago de Cali is home to a vast array of historical tourism. There are a great and many attractions here in downtown Cali such as churches like the La Merced and La Ermita, which are very popular sights. These historical sights are so very popular because of the preservation of the old city and other historical land marks. One of the most important zones here in Cali is La Plaza de Caycedo, which is considered by locals and tourists alike to be the center of the city. It is a square surrounded by an array of both historical and modern buildings. Morelia is known to be one of the colonial jewels of the country. It became a World Heritage Site in 1991. It is the capital of the Mexican state Michoacan de Ocampo. Morelia is one of the cleanest cities in Mexico and is proclaimed for its great city wide beauty. It is surrounded by rolling hills and also renowned for the beautiful country side that surrounds it. The whole of Morelia's downtown is a historic adventure. It covers about one hundred and fifty city blocks and contains over one thousand historic buildings. The city is best known for the magnificence of its monuments which, of course, are mostly colonial. There is also the convent of El Carmen and the convent of Santa Catarina. So, if you are a religious type of person who wants to appreciate some of the most beautiful temples ever built in honor of Jesus and the Saints, Morelia is a perfect destination.

There are plenty of other structures and convents which should also be praised for their architecture and design which are only slightly less well known. These buildings include the convent of La Merced, the college of Santa Rosa Maria, the Palace of the Executive, the eighteenth century palaces of the Legislature and Judiciary, the college Primitivo y Nacional de San Nicolas de Hidalgo, the Museum Michoacano. There is, of course, the house where Jose Maria Morelos was born whom was a founder of the city. This house is now used as a museum, library and other cultural events.

If you are interested in seeing high quality art works you will want to visit the Casa de las Artesanias. Along with many other great museums in the town to see. There are also a great and many churches in the other parts of town that are noteworthy and proclaimed by the locals to be a must see. There is the Templo de las Rosas which is annex to the Conservatorio de las Rosas. Both of these buildings are wonderful examples of baroque style of architecture. Then last but not least there is the Templo de San Diego which was built as an interpretation of the Rococo style using indigenous colors and an indigenous technique.

So you can choose between these companies in deciding which bus you are going to use. Barranquilla is a beautiful city with many rich cultural activities to get involved in, especially if you at the right time of year. As with many other South American cities, Barranquilla is home to a fantastic, world renowned carnival, known simple as the Carnaval de Barranquilla. This carnival is one with traditions that date back to the nineteenth century. This carnival takes place four days before Ash Wednesday. During this monstrous carnival, most other city activities are stopped in their tracks due to the enormous amount of people in the streets dancing, performing musical masquerades and parades. This carnival is second only in size to Rio's parade, but is much less commercialized in comparison. There are many cultural dances and themes you may only find involved in this carnival, such as the Spanish dance of paloteo. There are also great dances like the African Congo and the mico y micas. There is a great and wide variety of Colombian music performed here at the carnival, such as the cumbia style of music. This style includes a variety of drums and wind instruments and ensembles. This carnival was proclaimed in the year 2003 as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Even though the carnival takes the cake for the city's main tourist attraction there are still other great things to do in this beautiful city. There is a great appreciation for the fine arts here in the city of Barranquilla. The main cultural scene in the city can be found at the Teatro Municipal Amira de la Rosa. Barranquilla is also home to other great cultural buildings such as the Cinemateca del Caribe, Centro Cultural Avianca, Centro Colombo Americano, and the Alliance Franaise which, of course, belongs to the Barranquilla chapter.

Here in Barranquilla, there are also many end of the year festivities which they start planning for in November, and sometimes even as early as October. Christmas, or Navidad in Spanish, is not only a widely celebrated holiday, but the holiest of days to the Spanish and other inhabitants of all South American countries and cities. The whole city of Barranquilla is transformed into a gorgeous city of lights and nativity scenes with parties every weekend of December to boot! If you are planning on coming to this part of the world for a vacation, December is a great time of the year to see this amazing city. It is especially a great time if you enjoy Christmas as much as the natives to this city!

Festivals in Germany

Germany holds some of the largest festivals in the world. They are throughout the year and are held all over the country. They consist about anything you can think of from music to the beloved beer. The largest public festival in the world is Oktoberfest. It is held in Munich and is a 16 day event that starts at the end of September. There are roller coasters and carousals in the Theresienwiese fairgrounds for the children who come with the adults. In Berlin, the Carnival of the Cultures is a four day festival that celebrates the cities diversity. In the past more than 200 million people visited the festival within its four days. It started in 1996, and has turned into a big event since over 400,000 citizens of the city are from over 200 countries throughout the world. The highlight of the festival is the Whitsuntide street parade which consists of street dancers, jugglers, and floats. There is also a children's festival that takes place nearby in Goerlitzer Park which is specifically aimed towards children.

One of the biggest music festivals in northern Germany is Lake Maschsee Festival. This festival is the kickoff to 20 days of events that have been nicknamed "the longest party mile in northern Germany". Millions of people come to enjoy music, food, and comedians. There are also clowns, and street parades which run down to the lake. People of all ages will have a wonderful time. The local parks hold special events for children. Fireworks kick the festival off, and another firework show ends the festival after the 20 days.

If you love Jazz music, be sure to go to the Baltic Sea Jazz Festival which is held in Rostock. Over 25 bands perform which includes many international jazz musicians that play in different styles. Along with the other famous landmarks here in the city of Rio de Janeiro, there is the giant statue of Jesus, which is also know as Christ the Redeemer. This statue is located on top of the Corcovado Mountain, and has just been recently named one of the Seven Wonders of the World. The Carnival of Rio De Janeiro is one of the most famous to take place anywhere in the world. The carnival usually takes place in the first weeks of May and is an international event.

Another one of the biggest amusement parks in Germany is Heide Park. It is very popular in the town of Soltau which is in the northern part of the country. It is a wooden roller coasted that was once the steepest in the world. There are also shows throughout the day which feature different themes. You may be able to see a dolphin show, pirate show, or a parrot show.

Movie lovers may want to take a visit to the Movie Park. It is located in Bottrop-Kirchhellen and consists of 6 different areas. Some of the attractions include Movie Magic Voyagers to Mars, which is a special effects show, a Hollywood Film Museum which is ran by MGM, The High Fall, which is a Freefall Tower ride, and a Blues Brothers show. They also have a "Nickland" which is especially for children. They will be able to ride Dora's Adventure Express, and see the Backyardigans Hip Hopper.

Phantasialand is a theme park that attracts more than 2 million people a year. It is located in the city of Brhl. The park is family-oriented but also has thrill rides. Some of the lands that are throughout the park are China Town, which is the biggest collection of Chinese structures outside of China, Mexico, which offers dark rides and architecture from Mexico, and The Silver City which is themed around the Wild West and includes two white water rides. Landmarks and Monuments in Germany

It eventually was restored and once again became the seat of parliament. There is a dome at the top of the building where people can see a view of Berlin. It is free to enter the building but beware of the long lines and security checks.

While in Berlin, you will probably be able to see Germany's well known landmark, which is the Fernsehturm. It is a television tower in the center of the city. It is the fourth tallest free standing structure in all of Europe. Visitors take a 4 second shaft ride to the sphere section of the structure and get amazing views of the city up to 25 miles on a clear day! There is also a restaurant that rotates every 20 minutes which is sure to be a memorable dining experience.

If you visit Munich, one of their popular landmarks is the Olympic Tower. It is located within the Olympic Park. It came about in 1968 and is the central point for radio and television in southern Germany. Part of the tower is for different radio and television facilities. It takes only 27 seconds to get to the different areas on the tower thanks to an express elevator. The viewing area has a restaurant at the height of 590 feet. You will be able to have a wonderful meal while viewing the city of Munich. The restaurant turns every 53 minutes.
